Rj and I are heading to the Lakes District in England this September for an extended hike with friends. Ninety-two miles in seven days.
We are freakin crazy.
The last time we have taken on this type of extended physical activity was five years ago. When I was in much better shape. A couple of wonderful years in Kauai, a new travel schedule for art fairs, and the inability to find a gym I like down here on Cape Cod have significantly impacted my physical state since then.
And not for the better.
Dragging myself upstairs to our ‘guest bedroom turned home gym’ to execute a now regular exercise schedule isn’t easy for me. While I enjoy the benefits of exercise after the deed is done, I am not easily motivated to put my sneakers on and get started.
So, I turn to music to inspire me.
Music has the magical ability to transport me to another world. All I need is the right genre, and I feel like I can accomplish anything! But did you know that music has some amazing health benefits as well?
Studies have shown that music heightens positive emotion in the brain, stimulating dopamine hits. Dopamine makes us feel good, so you want a few extra hits.
Scientists have also shown that music can reduce stress and anxiety, decrease pain, and may have a positive influence on our immune systems.
And music makes us want to dance – hello physical activity!
Music also supports your professional development. For example, prior to an important presentation, listening to a ‘kick butt’ song will increase your confidence. A little ‘Eye of the Tiger’ never let anyone down. (For those of you who may be too young, or never listened to Hair Band Rock, here is a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4 For those of you who remember Survivor, this video will bring a smile to your face.)
Music plays a central role in moving me, my business and my life forward every week. Here is my weekly Pandora playlist:
- Monday – Planning and organizing my week – Country. Depending on the week I either listen to the Carrie Underwood channel or the Zac Brown channel. Carrie charges me up, Zac mellows me out.
- Tuesday – Busy day of clients, emails, proposals – Today’s Hits make me feel present. Also, I need to be able to talk to my nieces about Justin Bieber.
- Wednesday – Usually a long day of work or writing, I like to listen to Rob Thomas or John Meyer radio – they both have an easy to listen to style with meaningful lyrics.
- Thursday – Client day again – I usually put on Pink Radio – and listen to the strong female vocals reminding us we can do anything!
- Friday – TGIF! I’m usually focused on the business part of running a business, so what better way to end the week and inspire me than Hair Bands Radio!! I so look forward to Fridays. I love me some 80’s rock bands with really long hair.
- On the rare Saturday that I have to get some work done, my Kid Rock disc keeps me company. Because be honest – if you are working on a Saturday, you deserve some well placed ‘F’ words.
- Sunday – I turn on WPXY 106 Cape radio for some old and new rock. Great for cleaning, doing laundry, cooking, hanging around with Rj doing nothing, reminding us of our high school days and first concerts.
Before a big presentation, Bon Jovi reminds me that ‘It’s My Life’. Great confidence builder – reminding me to focus on things in my control, and let go of those outside my control. Control = Confidence.
Trying to sleep on an overnight flight? Deva Premal and Miten have some amazing meditative chants that always relax me.
And those workouts that I need extra motivation for? DISCO! This is a new find for me but I am completely addicted. I actually look forward to my workout because I have a great reason to listen to old Bee Gees music that simply makes me want to move!
Music can lift you up, calm you down, build your confidence, make you happier, help you sleep, and encourage mindfulness as you find yourself lost in some meaningful lyrics.
